Celebrating “The Campus at Chapel Hill,” Book Launch and Reception

The Campus at Chapel Hill: 225 Years of Architecture: The only book exclusively on the architecture of the University of North Carolina, the country’s first state university
Explore the architectural history and significance of iconic buildings on the UNC campus: the ideas and architects involved, the people (including high-spirited students) who were prime movers for specific buildings, and how green design initiatives have been incorporated into current buildings. The newly released and updated book from the Chapel Hill Historical Society, The Campus at Chapel Hill: 225 Years of Architecture, provides an in-depth look at the architecture of the nation’s oldest campus.
“UNC is a treasure of architectural styles that spans the university’s 225 years,” says Chapel Hill Historical Society President Sarah Geer. “The campus is called a North Carolina living museum of American architecture. And this book captures that panorama and is filled with fascinating photos, rare documents, and Allcott’s colorful and whimsical sketches.”
The Campus at Chapel Hill: 225 Years of Architecture updates Professor John V. Allcott’s seminal 1986 book with a Foreword by Carol L. Folt, UNC’s 11th Chancellor, and an Addendum by JJ Bauer of the UNC Department of Art and Art History. Professor Allcott often used his book as part of his well-loved tours of the campus for students and visitors. “I had to keep my copy of the original book chained to my desk due to its popularity and usefulness,” says Missy Julian-Fox, former director of the UNC Visitors’ Center. “There is no other book like it.”
The campus’s original ten buildings, dating from 1793, are illustrated and covered in some detail. For the twentieth century, when buildings proliferated, only selected ones are discussed, but all structures erected before 1985 are listed in the Campus Chronology, with capsule information about each. Dr. Bauer’s addendum covers selected buildings erected since 1986. “This new edition would not have been possible without the help and support of the University,” adds Carl Anderson, Vice President of the Historical Society, who championed the new publication.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
John V. Allcott (1905 – 1989), founder and first chairman of the UNC Art and Art History Department, taught courses in art and modern architecture to generations of UNC students. Campus tours conducted by Professor Allcott were part of UNC’s commencement week activities for many years.
JJ Bauer is the Visual Resources Curator and Teaching Assistant Professor at UNC’s Department of Art and Art History, and Adjunct Faculty in the School of Information and Library Science.
